Drawing Hairborder: 0pt none; margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; cursor: pointer;
is Easier than You Think
Drawing hair can be confusing because we believe that we have to draw each individual hair. At least, that is the way the analytical mind thinks.

Instead,
if we use the Creative part of our
mind, and look for patterns and
shapes, then drawing
hair
becomes
simple, easy and fun.

Do You REALLY Want a Critique?

Posted by artmentor on Jul-22-2008

Please Look at My Art
. . . and Tell Me What You Think!
I’m willing to bet that you’ve seed this too. Artist friends share with you their latest work. Emails appear in your mailbox and notices are posted all over social networking sites with this question from your artistic friends. They contain this request: “Take a look at my art and tell me what you think about my work!”

They aren’t asking for a constructive critique and you know it. What they really want to hear is how great their art is and… (from me) can they sell it.

Creation Frustration

Posted by artmentor on Jul-16-2008

Artists are Fearful Lot
We artists seem to have loads of fear issues. I want to address just one of those fears - the fear of creating something ugly. By ugly I mean, ugly in the eyes of the creating artist.

Artists are extremely fearful of what I call, “Making Ugly”.

12 Inexpensive Ways to Find Inspiration

Posted by artmentor on Jul-15-2008

Seeking Inspiration for Art?
Create your own library of research by collecting through these 12 Inexpensive and Fun avenues. When you have your own library, you have inspiration at your fingertips.

Many artists use the internet for research (and so do I), but I’d like to share with you other ways I enjoy gathering photos, pictures, images of paintings and everyday treasures to draw and paint.

1 - Go through Old Photos. Especially those black and white images from the past! They are excellent for value studies.

2 - Browse Thrift Stores and seek out old magazines, books and prints. This is great for your wallet, great for the economy and super terrific for the environment!

3 - Junk Mail. Believe it or not - go through your junk mail! Lots of eye catching images are sent for just that reason - to catch your eye. So clip them out and save them. Read the rest of this entry »

How to Get An Art Review

Posted by artmentor on Jul-8-2008

Getting in the Press
Press releases flood in to newspapers, magazines, radios, etc. If they have room, they release them. If they run out of room, oh well….. They’ll do articles when something intrigues them or when they feel it will help to sell their publication.

I’m Administrator for the group
Self-Promotion Skills for Artists” on the Fine Art America website. Dean Triolo is a member of the group and asked this question:

“Now my issue is trying to get reviewed. I have been showing consistently since 2000. Sometimes I handle the press releases, sometimes the gallery. I have faxed, emailed, sent FedEx and phoned in some incredible press releases. I even had someone who used to do PR for a New York gallery help me with a few. All to no avail. I have sent them to everyone from Peter Frank to the Culver City News and not one writer has shown up. I even had a friend promise that his partner from ART LTD would show up at my last solo show. Sorry about rambling but I think you get the idea. So, what is the trick? How do you get them out to review a show?” ~Dean Triolo

Can I Control the Printing of My Art?

Posted by artmentor on Jul-2-2008

Controlling the Printing of Your Art
Be prepared to have very little involvement with the actual printing process of your art when you license it. Publishers usually have the final say. Why?

Different Processes
Each type of product is printed in different ways. The printing of art on tile is a totally different process than the printing of art on fabric. In fact, printing on dark fabric is different than printing on white fabric and printing on terry cloth is different than printing on canvas. Read the rest of this entry »

See More by Seeing Less!

Posted by artmentor on Jul-1-2008

When is Seeing Less, Seeing More? When you SQUINT!

Squint often at your subject and also at your drawing or painting. If you can squint away an element in your subject, but not in your painting or drawing, then you know the value is too light or too dark in that area of your work and you will know that you need to tone it down.
